Merit Badge Workshops

COVID-19 Information

Adhering to local, state and federal guidelines, and with everyone’s health and safety in mind, the following guidelines have been implemented.

  • Maximum enrollment for each workshop to 12 scouts per class. 
  • Classroom desks and supplies will be disinfected between sessions.
  • No supplies will be shared.
  • Scouts will be seated a minimum of 6 feet apart at desks, workstations, and simulators.
  • Masks must be worn by instructors and scouts.
  • Hand sanitizer will be used regularly.
  • Temperature will be taken of all who enter building.
  • Periodic cleaning/sanitizing of the museum will take place daily.  

General Information​

  • Class time varies based on the badge. Please review each badge workshop for exact times.
  • Pricing varies per badge. A $5 “Tag-a-long” ticket is available for parents who wish to participate in the class to assist the scout.
  • Parents or siblings must pay general admission fee if staying in the museum outside of assisting in the class.
  • All supplies, including blue cards are provided by LSFM.
  • All badge workshops are open to scouts ages 11-17.

This Year Scouts can earn the Aviation, Electronics, and American Heritage merit badges at LSFM!  

Aviation Merit Badge​

This three hour workshop provides a hand-on learning experience including fundamentals of flight, aircraft design, and piloting. Scouts prepare a flight plan, map their flight, and conduct a pre-flight inspection in our Mooney Hangar with the Ovation small aircraft. Then fly the route in the flight simulators in real time over accurate landscape to land at Scholes Airport in Galveston. After a classroom preview, use the exhibits in the Flight Academy to demonstrate your knowledge of flight dynamics and tour the collection of air-worthy Warbirds.

Price: $30 per Scout.

Electronics Merit BadgeSpring Break only!

People skilled in electronics are vital to the aviation industry. Learn the nuts and bolts of electronic devices and how to build and repair them safely. In our aircraft repair shop, practice proper soldering skills and build a circuit project.

Price: $30 per Scout.

American Heritage Merit BadgeSpring Break only!

Our collection of warbirds represent the heritage of the American people that fought to protect the rights outlined in the Constitution. Meet veterans that fought for those rights and hear their stories, discuss how history is depicted in movies, learn about local historic places and the events that happened there, and investigate the meaning of the Declaration of Independence and its importance to you and your family.

Price: $50 per Scout.

Requirements fulfilled: Completed in class: 1, 2ac, 3ab, 4ab, and 6. Completed as a prerequisite: 3c

We Also Offer Scout Overnights 

It’s LITERALLY a night at the museum…under the wings of history! It’s a night filled with aviation exploration including plane tours, preflight inspection of a real plane, testing your pilot skills and the science of what it takes to fly.

Scouts BSA can earn the Aviation merit badge during an Overnight.
