Girls in Aviation Day

The Houston Chapter of Women in Aviation International (WAI) has announced that a free program is offered to local girls ages 10 to 17 years to introduce them to the possibilities available in a career in aviation. The day’s activities will take place at the Lone Star Flight Museum from 10 until 2 on Saturday, September 23, 2017. 100 girls along with their chaperones are expected to attend. “We want our local girls to see that there are exciting careers available to them as engineers, astronauts, pilots, dispatchers, air traffic controllers, and dozens of other jobs within the aviation community,” says WAI Houston Chapter President, Jessica Garcia. “We will introduce the girls to role models and educate them in a fun and supportive atmosphere.”

The Women in Aviation Houston Chapter will join Women in Aviation International chapters around the world on September 23, 2017, for an outreach event to inspire the next generation of women in aviation. Chapters all over the world are putting on their own, unique programs, and U.S. states are proclaiming September 23, 2017 to be Girls in Aviation Day in their state.

Programs at Lone Star Flight Museum include a hands on experience with a working aircraft, an opportunity to fly a flight simulator, a scavenger hunt within Lone Star Flight Museums exhibits, a photo booth in front of an antique aircraft, and a influential female guest speaker. The young ladies will get hands on experience and an opportunity to see women from all walks of life succeeding in the aviation industry.

Attendees will also be able to earn the new Girl Scout Aviation Girl Fun Patch. “The program is free for participants and their chaperones,” Jessica Garcia added. “We just want to see girls interacting with positive role models and considering aviation as they make their college and career plans.”
