Seizing the opportunity to build a world-class aviation destination.

The Lone Star Flight Museum, home to one of the most important flying collections of historically significant aircraft in the country, was dealt a hard blow in September 2008 when Hurricane Ike caused $18 million in damage to the facility and its contents. Against all odds, the museum was able to re-open in January 2009.

The museum’s Board of Directors, however, was determined to turn the devastation caused by Ike into an opportunity to reexamine the museum’s mission, goals, and location. Using the museum’s existing collection of beautifully restored, award-winning aircraft as a foundation, the Board committed to build a new museum that would feature interactive, educational exhibits focusing on the science, technology, engineering, and math concepts essential to flight while allowing visitors to explore Texas’ rich aviation heritage.

After a thorough review of the available options, the Board of Directors chose a 13-acre tract at historic Ellington Airport as the site of its new museum and, in 2011, secured a 40-year lease from the City of Houston.

Since then, tremendous strides have been made toward making the new museum a reality. We are moving toward completion of a $38.5 million-dollar campaign to fully fund the relocation and construction of our new home at Ellington Airport, as well as the development of a revamped and expanded educational curriculum that will be unveiled at our new location. As we move closer to opening our new home, we invite you to help us cross the finish line.
